The Latest News from the Irish Heritage Society of Milford website:By-Laws Amendments on May Ballot (by IHSM Webmaster, published Sunday, 13 May 2012 00:00) The following by-laws amendments will be on the ballot at the May meeting.
Existing:
Article IV
Dues shall be set annually during the budget process. Dues are renewable annually and become the property of the Club. Dues are due in the Month of January, reminder letters will be sent out on the 15th of the month. There will be a procedure for reinstatement. Dues will not be refunded if a member should leave the club. There shall be no initiation fee for the Club. There shall be an application fee for all new members to be set by the membership committee.

F. Members considered "not in good standing" will not be allowed into meetings. The Membership Committee will arrange to check the status of all members at each meeting.

Our ancestors in the era A.D. 200-400 used the latest technology available when it came to messaging. They sensibly put to use the many rocks that abound in the Irish countryside. It was “stone-on-stone” technology, says Chris Conway, who with his wife Colleen will introduce us to the story of the earliest written language of Ireland at the May Irish History Round Table meeting. Chris learned about ogham, which is pronounced “o’-hem,” while a student at Trinity College in Dublin in the 1990s. In 2010, he and Colleen started an online business featuring the use of ogham in such gifts as prints, stationery and jewelry. At the meeting, he will present an overview of the origin and uses of ogham, including theories that examples of ogham are to be found in the United States. Colleen will explain the design and incorporation of ogham into modern day items. The Latest News from the Irish Heritage Society of Milford website:Tara Theatre tickets on sale now! Dinner discount too! (by Maureen Moore, published Friday, 04 May 2012 00:00) Tickets are printed and on sale now for all (3) evening performances of "The Rale McCoy" by J. J. McKeown, being presented by our own Tara Theatre Company. The performance dates are Thursday, June 28th, Friday June 29th, and Saturday June 30th, and will be held at the Stratford Theater, 2422 Main St, Stratford, CT 06615. McCoy's Irish Pub, right across from the theater, is offering a 20% discount on regular price dinner food items, either before or after the production - just show your tickets to receive the discount.

Ed McEnerney and his committee who tend to our lovely garden spot are looking for volunteers to help this season. Our spot is at the circle on New Haven Avenue where it joins Daniel Street. They have done a wonderful job so far, but need assistance with making it even more beautiful, planting some perennials, watering, and generally maintaining the area once plantings are in. "Luck of Irish Fair and Tag Sale" - Sat. May 12, 9am-2pm (by Maureen Moore, published Friday, 04 May 2012 00:00) Need a "little Irish" to fill that void between our March events and our September Irish festival? Well, this might fill the bill! An interesting event is being held at the Christ Episcopal Church, 526 Amity Road, (Rte 63), in Bethany, and all are invited. The proceeds go to benefit numerous charities, and the theme is predominantly Irish. Lunch items available with be corned beef and cabbage, vegetarian Irish stew, cottage pie, clam chowder, and strawberry shamrock shortcake. Also offered will be grill items such as hot dogs and hamburgers with chili and sauerkraut topping. There will be Irish music, and a special raffle basket of Irish items, along with booths featuring Irish wares. A garden area is planned (you may buy shamrocks), along with a bakery, and a bountiful tag sale. The fair will be held rain or shine, admission and parking are free. Questions? Jerry O'Sullivan has been widely hailed as America's premier uilleann piper. His reputation for technical and melodic mastery of the instrument, an Irish bagpipe known for its subtlety and expression, is unsurpassed in the United States, and is demanding considerable attention overseas. Jerry is also widely recorded on the tin whistle, the low whistle, the Highland Pipes and the Scottish smallpipes.
Jerry has appeared on more than 90 albums and has performed or recorded with artists such as The Boston Pops, Don Henley, Paul Winter, James Galway, Dolly Parton, The Colorado Symphony Orchestra, The Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Eileen Ivers, and many others. Any IHSM member is welcome to attend and offer suggestions regarding possible new events as well as existing annual events. If you would like to propose a new event, please bring all pertinent information to the meeting.
DIRECTIONS: I-95 to Exit 34.
At the bottom of the exit ramp turn right onto Bridgeport Avenue. Go approximately 1 mile to Naugatuck Avenue.

The Latest News from the Irish Heritage Society of Milford website:Board of Directors - Duties (by IHSM Webmaster, published Thursday, 29 March 2012 22:11) Duties of the officers
With the upcoming elections, it is important that those nominating others, and those running for office understand the duties of the office in question. Below are the duties of each position as taken from our club's Bylaws.
President
The president shall be the chief executive and chairman of the Board. The President shall preside at all meetings of the Club and the Board; shall be an ex-officio member of every committee; shall fill vacancies on the board of directors with the approval of the board; shall appoint such Activities chairpersons or ad hoc committee chairpersons as are needed or appropriate, and shall have the authority to remove them, with board approval; shall be empowered to co-sign Club checks; shall cooperate with all adopted recommendations of the audit committee; shall write a monthly article for the Club publication, and such other articles as appropriate for the good of the Club; may conducvt board votes by poll, with a full report at the next board of directors meeting; shall call for nominations at the March and April membership meetings; shall submit a written year-end report to the board of directors at the May meeting of the board.
Vice-President
The vice-president shall, during the term of office, become familiar with the duties of the office of president. In the event of a vacancy in the office of president, the vice-president shall become the president. The vice-president shall serve as program chair; shall be empowered to co-sign Club checks in the absence of the president; shall preside over meetings in the absence of the president.
Secretary

*****Discussion on proposal for St. Ann’s as future home of IHSM***: There will be a detailed presentation regarding the progress and findings concerning this proposal. Mike McCabe will speak on behalf of the Finance Committee and Tom Nelson will present on behalf of the Building Committee. If you have questions and concerns, you must attend, listen, and discuss. A VOTE ON ISSUE OF PROCEEDING IS BEING HELD ON SUNDAY APRIL 1ST at an Open House being held at St. Ann’s from 2-5 pm. See notice below for April 1st.
***** Nominations for Club officers**** are being accepted at the March and April General membership meetings. Members must be present to nominate and present to accept. They also must be in "Good Standing" which means membership dues for the current year must be paid in full. Everyone should give serious thought to these nominations for the next leaders of our organization.

In preparation for this year's Tara Theatre production, a backstage meeting will be held on Thursday, March 15th at 7pm at Margaret Egan Center in room 106, to go over what needs to be done for this years coming play (many tasks required behind the scenes). Two Irish Entertainment Events - both free!! (by Maureen Moore, published Friday, 09 March 2012 00:00) Monday, March 12, 7 pm at Milford Library, 57 New Haven Ave, in program room (downstairs): Milford actor Colin Lane and musician Rebecca Zaretzky will perform a lyrical, poetic review. "Did Your Mother Come From Ireland" is a slightly irreverent homage to St. Patrick with many of the old best loved songs. Even the jokes promise to be old standards. The performance is free and open to the public, and is funded by the Friends of Milford Library. ATTENDEES ARE ENCOURAGED TO WEAR GREEN!
Thursday, March 15, 7:30 pm at St. Gabriel Parish Hall, 26 East Broadway, Milford: The P.V. O'Donnell Comhaltas chapter will have a session featuring three-time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion, Dylan Foley, as well as IHSM's own John Whelan, awarding winning button accordianist.
