IHSM Annual Family Picnic – Saturday August 11^th, noon – 5 pm

Walnut Beach Pavilion, 113 East Broadway, Milford

Come and enjoy an affordable afternoon of food, fun, and games for all members and guests of our IHSM family!

Details to be finalized at committee meeting in mid-June, will be posted on website and included in meeting handouts in June and July. Several members have signed up to be on the planning committee, and more are welcome. Signup sheets for committee and for attending the event will be at May meeting.

Joan Sullivan has made the arrangements with Harbor Yard, with 30 tickets reserved (we can add on more if needed) and we need to guarantee a minimum of 20 attendees, and place a deposit right away. So check your calendar and bring your checks / cash to our meeting on Tuesday, May 29th.

By-Laws Amendments on June Ballot (by IHSM Webmaster, published Sunday, 13 May 2012 00:00)
The following by-laws amendments will be on the ballot at the June meeting.

Existing:

Article IV

Dues shall be set annually during the budget process. Dues are renewable annually and become the property of the Club. Dues are due in the Month of January, reminder letters will be sent out on the 15th of the month. There will be a procedure for reinstatement. Dues will not be refunded if a member should leave the club. There shall be no initiation fee for the Club. There shall be an application fee for all new members to be set by the membership committee.

Suggested Modification (more in
fitting with existing format of Article V and X:

PRESIDENT - Nominee for President, Marty Hardiman

I am running for President of the Irish Heritage Society for the 2012 / 2013 term year.

I am Co-Founder of the Irish Heritage Society as well as Co-Founder of the very successful Milford Irish Festival held each September. I have held the office of Vice President working with various committees within the club. I am still very active with the successful Tara Theater Company as a producer and director.

I have been very active in the Milford community since moving here in late 1973, serving on numerous elected positions as well as volunteering throughout our community. I have chaired the Milford Saint Patrick's Day Parade Committee since 1997. I am currently retired from the Milford Board of Education after serving as a Para-Educator with our special needs students for over 20 years. All of this experience has allowed to understand the needs of our citizens and given me contacts to try and meet these needs.

I would like to continue serving you and moving this club forward in promoting Irish Culture and Heritage as your President.

VICE-PRESIDENT -Nominee for Vice-President, Jennifer Hussey

I am running again for the position of Vice President for the 2012-2013 year. I’ve been Vice-President for the past term 2011-2012. In addition, I’ve held the position of Secretary for two terms from 2009-2011. I am also the Chairperson of the Children’s activities with both the annual festival and the children‘s activities through out the year. I have proven myself to be honest, trustworthy and competent in holding an Officer Position with this club. My Irish heritage has always been a part of my family upbringing; I have Irish roots on both my maternal and paternal sides. As Vice President I hope to work closely with the President and other members of the Executive Board in helping this organization to move forward and promote Irish heritage through-out the community.

I am honored to be nominated as Parliamentarian for the 2012-2013 year. I joined the IHSM in 2007 and immediately got involved with the Membership Committee. In 2009 I began serving the club as Trustee and have been on the Executive Board as Trustee for the past 3 years. I enjoy being actively involved in the club and my community. Professionally, I’ve been a Paralegal and Notary Public for 20 years with experience in a variety of practice areas. I own a Massage Therapy business here in Milford and I also served on the Board of Directors of the Rollers Meadow Condo Association as Secretary for 4 years from 2008 to 2011.

I am a 3rd Generation Milford Resident with Irish Heritage on both sides of my family (Wexford & Cork) and as such have a vested interest in this community and am interested in sharing our heritage with our wider Irish Community. I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue serving the membership and our Executive Board.

Hello, my name is Edward Foley McEnerney. I am running for the position of Sergeant at Arms. Though I believe this should be a two man position I, threw my hat in the ring. I wish Dennis McNamara the best and hope they vote us both in.

I am a charter member of the club and was there for the inception with Marty Hardiman and my friend and brother Chris McEnerney.

I have worked tirelessly for this club and where we are now. I have been Parade Coordinator for the past, o jeez I, don’t know 5 years let’s say. We won numerous awards in this time twice in both New Haven and Mystic. Yonkers NY, we won the Monsieur Foley Award for best Marching Unit. I am currently co chair of the activities committee and would love to see more activities with fewer restrictions, face it we are all adults here.

I have been actively in the festival in a way most do not know. Securing the stage and set up, toilets, cleanliness of them. The Ice Cream Truck. Thanks to the great volunteers from the Nelson Clan.

I have been involved with the picnics, Christmas parties, Irish dinners and I will stop here.

The bottom line is, I have put in so much to this club it is part of me as it is to my brother Chris. I would love to see all of us go forward and get a club house in harmony. I will repeat that the Sergeant at Arms Position should be a two man job, and those who have done it I believe will agree.

In closing I am the sixth child to Stuart J. McEnerney and Mary G. Foley. Thank You all for your support in all are Irish activities. Kathy, Eileen, Lynn, Jean, Jimmie, Chris, and Stuart. My nephews Celtic Glen, Ollie and Charlie you and Uncle Chris rock. Hope you play Election Day.

TRUSTEE - Nominee for First Year Trustee, Joe Burton

I have been a member of the Irish Heritage Society since 2008, joining after attending that year’s Irish Festival. Professionally, I have worked for a number of years in the insurance and risk management field. For the past 20 years, I have worked with a company specializing in providing insurance services to churches, schools, social service agencies and other religious organizations. I have experience working with non-profit entities, and understand their unique risks and challenges.

I hope to contribute to and give back to this organization that I have grown to enjoy in my short time as a member. My immediate goal is to help all members understand the importance of their contribution and participation in the ongoing activities and charitable works of the Society. Longer term, I would like to work with the Society’s officers to set clear objectives for the short and long term, and help communicate these objectives to the members.

Ogham Art, Ancient Irish Writing

Our ancestors in the era A.D. 200-400 used the latest technology available when it came to messaging. They sensibly put to use the many rocks that abound in the Irish countryside. It was “stone-on-stone” technology, says Chris Conway, who with his wife Colleen will introduce us to the story of the earliest written language of Ireland at the May Irish History Round Table meeting. Chris learned about ogham, which is pronounced “o’-hem,” while a student at Trinity College in Dublin in the 1990s. In 2010, he and Colleen started an online business featuring the use of ogham in such gifts as prints, stationery and jewelry. At the meeting, he will present an overview of the origin and uses of ogham, including theories that examples of ogham are to be found in the United States. Colleen will explain the design and incorporation of ogham into modern day items. Tara Theatre tickets on sale now! Dinner discount too! (by Maureen Moore, published Friday, 04 May 2012 00:00)
Tickets are printed and on sale now for all (3) evening performances of "The Rale McCoy" by J. J. McKeown, being presented by our own Tara Theatre Company. The performance dates are Thursday, June 28th, Friday June 29th, and Saturday June 30th, and will be held at the Stratford Theater, 2422 Main St, Stratford, CT 06615. McCoy's Irish Pub, right across from the theater, is offering a 20% discount on regular price dinner food items, either before or after the production - just show your tickets to receive the discount.

Attention all you gardeners out there! Ed McEnerney and his committee who tend to our lovely garden spot are looking for volunteers to help this season. Our spot is at the circle on New Haven Avenue where it joins Daniel Street. They have done a wonderful job so far, but need assistance with making it even more beautiful, planting some perennials, watering, and generally maintaining the area once plantings are in. "Luck of Irish Fair and Tag Sale" - Sat. May 12, 9am-2pm (by Maureen Moore, published Friday, 04 May 2012 00:00)
Need a "little Irish" to fill that void between our March events and our September Irish festival? Well, this might fill the bill! An interesting event is being held at the Christ Episcopal Church, 526 Amity Road, (Rte 63), in Bethany, and all are invited. The proceeds go to benefit numerous charities, and the theme is predominantly Irish. Lunch items available with be corned beef and cabbage, vegetarian Irish stew, cottage pie, clam chowder, and strawberry shamrock shortcake. Also offered will be grill items such as hot dogs and hamburgers with chili and sauerkraut topping. There will be Irish music, and a special raffle basket of Irish items, along with booths featuring Irish wares. A garden area is planned (you may buy shamrocks), along with a bakery, and a bountiful tag sale. The fair will be held rain or shine, admission and parking are free. Questions? Jerry O'Sullivan has been widely hailed as America's premier uilleann piper. His reputation for technical and melodic mastery of the instrument, an Irish bagpipe known for its subtlety and expression, is unsurpassed in the United States, and is demanding considerable attention overseas. Jerry is also widely recorded on the tin whistle, the low whistle, the Highland Pipes and the Scottish smallpipes.

His first two solo albums, The Gift (Shanachie,1998), and The Invasion (Green Linnet, 1987) have both received critical acclaim, quickly finding their way to the top of a number of "best albums of the year" lists. Jerry has released a solo album, O'Sullivan Meets O'Farrell (Jerry O'Sullivan Music, 2005), which features music from the 200 year old O'Farrell tutor and tune collections. Most recently he has released the much anticipated O'Sullivan Meets O'Farrell (Volume II.) ( Jerry O'Sullivan Music 2010.) Jerry has also recorded a number of film soundtracks including From Shore to Shore, The Long Journey Home, Far and Away, Africans in America, and Out of Ireland, and has appeared on numerous television commercials.

Monday, May 7th, 5-7 PM, "19TH HOLE HAPPY HOUR" at Anthony D's, 331 New Haven Ave, Milford, next to Beachwood Florist. Anthony D's is the generous sponsor of the beer tent at the 2012 Lyle James Scholarship Golf Tournament, so let's come out and say thank-you, and check out their new digs. Newly renovated ambiance, happy hour food and beverages, and for your listening pleasure, the piano playing of Sean Rainey!! Golf tournament applications will be available, for golfers, for tee sponsors, and for non-golfers who wish to attend the post-tournament festivities.

Friday, May 11th, 12:30 pm, monthly luncheon at Knapps Landing,

The Activities Committee will meet Tuesday, April 17th, at 7:00 PM, at Margaret Egan Center, 35 Matthews St, Milford, in Room 139 (directions below). Any IHSM member is welcome to attend and offer suggestions regarding possible new events as well as existing annual events. If you would like to propose a new event, please bring all pertinent information to the meeting.

DIRECTIONS: I-95 to Exit 34.

At the bottom of the exit ramp turn right onto Bridgeport Avenue. Go approximately 1 mile to Naugatuck Avenue.

Take a left onto Naugatuck Ave. and proceed approximately ¼ of a mile through the first traffic light.

Turn right onto Mathew Street and follow to the end.

The Margaret Egan Center is on the right with parking on the left or in rear.

Wednesday, 4/11/12: TRADITIONAL CONCERT OF IRISH MUSIC

‘Tigh Na Coille’ an Irish Youth Folklore Troupe is currently visiting this area from Co Clare , Ireland on a cultural exchange program.

There are 12 young people in the group, ranging in age from 11 to 17 years old and they play a variety of traditional instruments including concertinas, fiddles, flutes, uileann pipes and harp.

They are performing in concert at the Irish American Community Center, 9 Venice Place, East Haven, CT 06512on this Wednesday April 11^th 2012 at 7:00PM

Duties of the officers

With the upcoming elections, it is important that those nominating others, and those running for office understand the duties of the office in question. Below are the duties of each position as taken from our club's Bylaws.

President

The president shall be the chief executive and chairman of the Board. The President shall preside at all meetings of the Club and the Board; shall be an ex-officio member of every committee; shall fill vacancies on the board of directors with the approval of the board; shall appoint such Activities chairpersons or ad hoc committee chairpersons as are needed or appropriate, and shall have the authority to remove them, with board approval; shall be empowered to co-sign Club checks; shall cooperate with all adopted recommendations of the audit committee; shall write a monthly article for the Club publication, and such other articles as appropriate for the good of the Club; may conducvt board votes by poll, with a full report at the next board of directors meeting; shall call for nominations at the March and April membership meetings; shall submit a written year-end report to the board of directors at the May meeting of the board.

Vice-President

The vice-president shall, during the term of office, become familiar with the duties of the office of president. In the event of a vacancy in the office of president, the vice-president shall become the president. The vice-president shall serve as program chair; shall be empowered to co-sign Club checks in the absence of the president; shall preside over meetings in the absence of the president.

Secretary

The secretary shall act as secretary at all meetings of the general membership and the board of directors; shall keep in permanent form record of all meetings of the general membership and the board of directors; shall read all voted resolutions at the general membership meetings; shall duplicate a copy of the minutes for distribution at the next board meeting; shall have available at each general meeting, a copy of all minutes of all meetings from the previous twelve months; shall...
